John Newton (1725-1807) authored this famous hymn. Newton did not consider himself a spiritual man. However, when sailing through a violent storm, he experienced what he referred to later as his “great deliverance.”
He wrote in his journal that when all seemed lost and his ship would sink, he cried out, “Lord, have mercy upon us.” Later in his cabin he reflected on what he had said, and began to believe that God had addressed his need through the storm, and that grace had begun to work in him. Newton, changed by the amazing grace of God, later became an ordained minister.
“’Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far.” Notice how the word “me” in this verse falls in the middle of the design - like it is encircled. This is our amazing God - that He would personally save each one of us, encircling us with His grace - through His Son Jesus Christ.
And Grace will lead me home!
